Open Days and Events
Whether you’re a lifelong green thumb or just looking for a peaceful escape into the NSW countryside, Markdale Station offers a rare chance to step into a living piece of history.
Designed in 1949 by the legendary Edna Walling, this 5-acre masterpiece is a symphony of stone pathways, native-meets-exotic plantings, and quiet, sun-drenched nooks.
Here is everything you need to know about visiting throughout the seasons.
Seasons at Markdale
The garden is a "cool climate" gem, meaning it transforms dramatically four times a year:
Spring (Sept – Nov): The "showstopper" season. Expect an explosion of color, the heady scent of wisteria on the pergolas, and the lush awakening of the famous thyme lawns.
Summer (Dec – Feb): A cool sanctuary. Escape the heat under the shade of massive golden and weeping elms, or enjoy a picnic on the lawn.
Autumn (Mar – May): A photographer’s dream. The deciduous trees turn into a tapestry of fiery oranges, deep reds, and golds against the rustic stone walls.
Winter (June – Aug): The "bones" of the garden. Walling’s architectural genius is most visible here, with frost-covered stone paths and the elegant structure of the dormant trees.
How to Visit
Markdale offers several ways to experience the garden, depending on whether you want a quick wander or a weekend immersion:
Crookwell Garden Festival
Markdale traditionally opens its gates for the Crookwell Garden Festival.
Next Date: 7–8 November 2026.
Why go: This is when the garden is at its absolute peak, and the Head Gardener is often on hand to share history and horticultural tips.
Garden Open Days
While Markdale remains a private sanctuary for most of the year, it opens its gates to the public during select seasonal open days and local festivals.
Garden Stay
The best way to see the garden is to live in it! You can book a stay in the 1850s Stone Cottages or the Shearer’s Quarters. Guests have full access to the garden, tennis court, and pool throughout their stay.
